Aquamarine, aptly named in Latin for seawater, is the blue to green-blue variety of the mineral Beryl. Because of the traditional hues, images of calm seas and refreshing pools come to mind. Due to the 7.5-8 Mohs hardness rating, Aquamarine gemstones make a great choice for everyday wear. It is the classic birthstone of March and was thought to bring sailors good luck and smooth waters during long voyages.
The mineral is made up of Beryllium, Aluminum, and Silicate and is formed in a hexagonal shape. It can sometimes be found in large enough sizes to make gems of ups to 100 carats.
